Supporting Career Progression: Jane Jones Completes School Business Professional Level 4 Apprenticeship with HOET
At Heart of England Training, we’re proud to celebrate the achievements of our learners—and Jane Jones’ journey is a perfect example of how apprenticeships can support career progression and personal growth.
Jane, who works at Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council within their Virtual School, recently completed the School Business Manager apprenticeship with us. Her role had evolved significantly over time, moving beyond administration into more strategic and operational responsibilities. Recognising this shift, Jane chose to gain a formal qualification to reflect and strengthen the work she was already doing.
“The qualification I’ve achieved gives me the paper qualification to back up the experience I already had. It’s really helped me grow into my role.” – Jane Jones
Tailored Support in a Unique Setting
Jane’s experience highlights the importance of delivering training that is adaptable to each learner’s context. As she works in a virtual school environment—a setting that differs significantly from a traditional physical school—our delivery was shaped to reflect those differences.
Jane worked closely with her designated educator, Heidi, who provided one-to-one support throughout the course.
“Heidi supported me all the way. She had great background knowledge and really understood my role in the Virtual School. She always had good suggestions and ideas, and I couldn’t have done it without her!”
We also understand how valuable peer learning can be. Jane particularly enjoyed the group workshop days, which gave her the opportunity to network with fellow learners and share experiences.
“The day courses were great—not just for the learning but also for the chance to hear about other people’s experiences and ideas.”
A Message to Future Apprentices
Jane admits that taking on an apprenticeship while working full-time initially felt daunting—but she now encourages others to take the leap.
“Do it! It may seem like a lot to achieve while you’re also working, but it’s worth it. It’s great for your own personal development.”
She also appreciates the flexibility that allowed her to complete the course during working hours—something she feels was key to her success.
“It’s a way of gaining a qualification while continuing to work. That qualification could help you move up the career ladder or apply for different jobs in the future.”
