“An apprenticeship is the best thing you can do”

The first unisex salon in Peterborough when it opened in 1974, Michael John Hair Artwork is now a leading salon with a strong reputation for education and modern work.

Our relationship with the salon began four years ago: “it has been a breeze”, says Amber (Creative Designer who takes the lead on NVQ training and apprentices). “Our apprentices get the best training from working hairdressers and everyone stays up-to-date.”

Amber was pleased with HOET’s work during the coronavirus lockdowns: “the assessors were like angels…they kept in touch with our apprentices, checked-in on their wellbeing and kept on top of theory work. This enabled us to get back to earning after the pandemic.”

Amber emphasised the importance of achieving Maths & English, adding that confident verbal and written communication skills are key in the Hair & Beauty industry.

Some current trainees explained that the main benefit to them of an apprenticeship is working while learning: “I couldn’t imagine just finishing a college course and going straight to work in a salon…my apprenticeship means I have gained knowledge and experience from others and become safe and confident in the salon environment.”

Another apprentice added that she enjoys working with such a variety of clients and stylists. “You become confident because you’re around it all the time and you get help from people who actually do the job.”

Shannon has just achieved a Distinction in her Level 2 Hair Professional Apprenticeship Standard: “Personally, I think an apprenticeship is the best thing you can do. You’re learning while working, it will boost your confidence and communication skills. You already have a job and you get to build up your clientele.”

Shannon’s advice to other apprentices is: “Don’t stress about the EPA. Make sure you plan thoroughly, and just acct as if the assessors aren’t there.” Shannon is looking forward to beginning her Level 3 Advanced & Creative Hair Professional Apprenticeship Standard soon.
