In England, over 130,000 people were employed in hairdressing and barbering in 2019, 87% in that industry were female. In fact, there are plenty of women getting involved, and their work ethic is exactly what led them to success.
Many barbers recommend an apprenticeship program to start your training. Our Level 2 Barbering and Level 3 Hairdressing Apprenticeships are perfect for those wishing to start their career, as well as giving a chance to advance your skills developed from the Level 2 qualification.
A cut above the rest
Alice, Barbershop owner of The Grooming Room, has worked with Heart of England Training since she was a learner herself. Now an employer, she feels that barbers can benefit from having an apprentice work at their shop.
“It helps build their career without putting too much pressure on themselves, gaining knowledge and education” she said “The client can see them grow individually in the barbershop and becoming part of the team.”
Sian, her former apprentice, joined the Grooming Room over two years ago after starting her Barbering Level 2 Apprenticeship. Once she became fully qualified, Sian decided to follow Alice’s footsteps, and is currently doing her Level 3 Management Apprenticeship.
“I feel like I have gained so much experience” she said “this is definitely going to help with the business side of things, not just barbering. Understanding both elements is going to definitely help my career.”
What to look out for
It is true that people do not always respond to the term, female barber, but the world of hairdressing isn’t as niche as you might think. Not only are you cutting a client’s hair, you are giving them the chance to relax with treatments you have on-hand.
So, if you are passionate about becoming a barber:
- Set goals
- Be proactive about your career
- Develop strong relationships with your clients
- Be confident and always stay positive
