From apprentice to trusted stylist at Michael John Hair Artwork

For many apprentices, completing their qualification is just the beginning. For Katie Wright, her journey with Heart of England Training (HOET) laid the foundations for a thriving career in the salon she trained in—Michael John Hair Artwork.

Since completing her apprenticeship in 2023, Katie has progressed into a Stylist Designer role, now managing her own clients, continuing her professional development, and even supporting the next generation of apprentices.

“I’ve progressed to a Stylist Designer position at Michael John Hair Artwork. I now manage my own column, carry out a wide range of hair services, and continue to build my skills and confidence with every client I see.”

Building a Career Through an Apprenticeship

Katie’s journey highlights the value of combining hands-on salon experience with structured training.

Reflecting on her time with HOET, she credits the apprenticeship with giving her the confidence and practical skills needed to succeed in a fast-paced salon environment.

“My apprenticeship gave me the foundations I needed to start a successful career in hairdressing. The combination of salon experience and training through HOET meant I was able to put what I learned into practice straight away, which really helped me progress.”

Like many apprentices, Katie developed not only her technical ability, but the professionalism needed to build lasting client relationships—something that continues to shape her work today.

Skills That Last Beyond Qualification

Although Katie has progressed in her career, the skills gained during her apprenticeship remain central to her day-to-day role.

“Every day I use the consultation skills, client care techniques, colour knowledge, cutting skills, and professional standards that I learned during my apprenticeship.”

For Katie, communication has been just as important as technical training.

“Learning how to communicate effectively with clients and build relationships has been just as valuable as the technical training.”

These transferable skills have enabled her to build trust with clients and deliver a high standard of service—key to long-term success in the industry.

Progression, Pride, and Giving Back

Since qualifying, Katie has achieved several career milestones, including building a loyal client base and gaining recognition for her work.

“One of my biggest achievements has been progressing to a Stylist Designer position and building a loyal client base. It has been incredibly rewarding to see clients return to me regularly and trust me with their hair.”

Her journey has also come full circle, as she now supports the development of apprentices within her salon team.

“Something I am very proud of recently is joining the education team at my salon to help train the apprentices. It’s very rewarding watching that moment someone has when they suddenly ‘get it’.”

Katie also achieved a Distinction in her qualification—an accomplishment that gave her confidence early in her career.

“Qualifying with a Distinction was a proud moment and gave me confidence that I was on the right career path.”

Continuing to Develop as a Stylist

Katie remains focused on progression, regularly investing in further education and training to develop her expertise.

“I’m always looking to continue developing as a stylist. My goals are to further improve my cutting and colouring skills, continue growing my client base, and stay up to date with the latest trends and techniques.”

This commitment to ongoing learning is key in an evolving industry—and a mindset that began during her apprenticeship.

Advice for Future Apprentices

For those considering a career in hairdressing, Katie’s advice is simple:

“I’d say go for it. An apprenticeship is a fantastic way to learn because you’re gaining practical salon experience while also receiving professional training.”

She highlights the importance of making the most of every opportunity:

“Be prepared to work hard, ask questions, and take every opportunity to learn. The more effort you put in, the more you’ll get out of it.”

Creating Opportunities Through Employer Partnerships

Katie’s success story also highlights the impact of strong employer partnerships. By training apprentices within their salon, Michael John Hair Artwork has been able to grow and develop talent internally—supporting individuals like Katie from their first steps in the industry through to senior roles.

For salons, investing in apprenticeships isn’t just about recruitment—it’s about building a skilled, confident workforce that understands your business from the inside out.

“Absolutely. My experience with HOET was very positive, and the support I received throughout my apprenticeship helped me develop both professionally and personally.”
