Today, the prime minister announced schools won’t reopen until March. But this needn’t act as a barrier to learning. That’s why our courses continue to run as normal – albeit remotely and until restrictions are lifted.
School Business Apprenticeship Level 4 is one of many educational management apprenticeships we offer and is suitable for bursars and business managers. But what are the different types of educational management and why are they so important?
Democratic versus autocratic
There are two types of educational management: democratic and autocratic. It’s important to break each one down if we’re to understand the key differences.
Democratic educational management
The democratic method trusts teachers to plan, organise, oversee, and review the assignments they’re responsible for.
This approach will only work if the following four key principles are agreed upon and followed:
- Responsibility. Instead of working in isolation, participants should share tasks – making it easier to achieve objectives.
- Freedom. People must be allowed to perform their roles freely and without having to wade through bureaucratic tape.
- Equality. Giving everyone access to the same rights, facilities, equipment, and opportunities is conducive to fair learning.
- Cooperation. Educational environments should foster inclusion so that people collaborate to make programmes successful.
Autocratic educational management
Business apprenticeships, marketing apprenticeships, and other courses could struggle under the rules of an autocratic system. In this situation, a top-down hierarchy exists – with a single body or person controlling all aspects of the learning process.
Freedom, cooperation, equality, and individual responsibility are pushed to one side in favour of a strict and highly-regulated approach that centralises power instead of distributing it.
Decentralised educational management is more commonly used – because it is less restrictive and encourages people to work together, freely, and without having to navigate complex regulations.
