How Lewis Spurr Found Success Through an APM Apprenticeship with Heart of England Training & National Grid
At Heart of England Training (HOET), we are passionate about supporting individuals on their journey to success. One such success story is Lewis Spurr, who embarked on an Associate Project Management (APM) Level 4 Apprenticeship with National Grid, with our expert training team providing the educational support to help him thrive.
Choosing the Apprenticeship Path
Lewis decided that an apprenticeship was the right choice for him, providing a strong foundation for his career. He told us, “I decided to do an apprenticeship as I believe it’s a great way to start your career, and I didn’t think going to university was the right option for myself.”
With family members already working in the industry and his brother having completed an apprenticeship, Lewis knew that this was the best route for him. Hearing about their experiences helped him take the leap, and he hasn’t looked back since.
Experiencing Growth at National Grid
Since joining National Grid, Lewis has gained invaluable experience, both professionally and personally. One of the highlights for him has been the relationships he has built within the company. “Every day I look forward to going to work, especially when I’m on site. I’m challenged every day and feel like I learn something new every day,” he shared.
Being part of a project in delivery has allowed him to develop hands-on site and project management experience, enhancing both his industry knowledge and his social skills.
How We Supported Lewis on His Journey
At Heart of England Training, we take pride in guiding apprentices every step of the way. Lewis found our support particularly valuable during his end-point assessment stage. “Charlotte has been helpful with sending over all the documentation for gateway,” he noted.
We know that every learner has a different approach to studying, and while Lewis found virtual APM sessions challenging, we were still able to provide him with the tools and resources he needed to succeed.
With over 40 years of experience, we specialise in delivering high-quality apprenticeships and full-time courses across various industries, including teaching, management, administration, customer service, marketing, hairdressing, beauty therapy, and football education. Our mission is simple: to provide training for a brighter future.
Advice for Aspiring Apprentices
For anyone considering an apprenticeship, Lewis offers some sound advice: “I’d definitely say look into it further. It’s like any decision in life—look at the pros and cons, speak to friends, family, and someone who’s doing an apprenticeship if you know someone.”
He also stresses the importance of choosing the right employer and programme, adding, “I believe I enjoy my apprenticeship because I work for a great company with great people.”
The Impact of Apprenticeships
Lewis’s story is a testament to how an apprenticeship can boost confidence and career prospects. Reflecting on his journey so far, he shared, “Since joining the apprenticeship scheme at National Grid, my confidence and social skills have massively developed compared to where I started.”
At Heart of England Training, we love seeing our apprentices grow into skilled professionals, and Lewis is a fantastic example of how apprenticeships create real opportunities for career progression and personal development.
