Building a Career Through Apprenticeships
For Nicole McCormack, choosing an apprenticeship was about gaining practical classroom experience whilst developing her knowledge and skills through structured learning. Studying for her Level 3 Teaching Assistant apprenticeship with Heart of England Training (HOET) allowed her to combine hands-on experience with professional development, giving her a strong foundation for a successful career in education.
Nicole wanted an opportunity to learn whilst working and found that the apprenticeship route offered the perfect balance.
“I wanted to have the experience of being in class while at the same time learning and adapting to the profession. Having the learning time away from the class enabled me to reflect on my learning and truly understand how to begin using the skills I was gaining along the way.”
A Supportive and Engaging Learning Experience
Throughout her apprenticeship, Nicole found the training delivered by HOET both informative and engaging. She particularly valued the support provided by her educator, as well as the additional Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities available to her.
Reflecting on her experience, Nicole praised the guidance she received throughout every stage of her programme.
“The training was fantastic. Informative and interesting as well as being engaging. My educator was amazingly supportive and regularly met and prepared me constantly for the next phase.”
The additional CPD sessions also played an important role in supporting her professional development.
“The CPD offered was brilliant and really assisted with my learning. I still reflect and use the skills and learning now in my current role as class teacher.”
Progressing to a Class Teacher Role
Nicole believes her apprenticeship was far more than a qualification; it was an essential stepping stone in her career journey. The skills, knowledge and confidence she gained through her apprenticeship have supported her progression into her current role as a class teacher.

“It was essential and a vital stepping stone to enable me to move forward in my profession.”

Having successfully completed her apprenticeship and continued her career progression, Nicole encourages anyone considering an apprenticeship to stay committed and organised throughout their learning journey.
“Remain focused and work hard. Stay organised and on top of workload. Always listen to your educator, their guidance is worth their weight in gold!”

When asked whether she would recommend completing an apprenticeship with HOET, Nicole’s answer was an enthusiastic yes.
“Yes, I would definitely recommend them. I wish I could have done my PGCE with them!”
