At Heart of England Training (HOET), we are passionate about creating opportunities for both our learners and our staff. Few people demonstrate this better than James Rumsby, our National Head of Sports Education, Pathways & Growth, who has progressed through multiple roles within the organisation since joining in 2021. Today, James leads the development and growth of our football education programmes across the country, helping shape the future of sport education at HOET.

Building a Career Through Opportunity

James began his HOET journey in September 2021 as a Sport Educator at our Romulus Academy. After spending around a year supporting learners in both their educational and sporting development, he progressed into the role of Academy Manager at Romulus, where he spent the next three years developing programmes, supporting staff, and helping learners achieve their goals.

In May 2025, James took on his current position as National Head of Sports Education, Pathways & Growth, overseeing the continued development of HOET’s football education provision across multiple academy sites. This progression reflects one of HOET’s core values: investing in people and creating opportunities for career growth. James is currently listed as HOET’s National Head of Sports Education, Pathways & Growth.

Reflecting on his journey, James said:

“One thing I am most proud of at HOET is the fact I have worked my way through all the roles available for a Sport Educator up to Head of Sport. It shows that the company will promote from within and support your development to move you forward in your career and your personal life.”

Leading Sport Education Across HOET

As National Head of Sports Education, Pathways & Growth, no two days are the same.

James is responsible for the planning, coordination and growth of football education programmes across HOET’s academy network. His role includes overseeing staff performance, supporting academy managers, monitoring learner progress, ensuring safeguarding and compliance standards are met, and maintaining high-quality educational and football experiences for learners.

He also works closely with football clubs, schools and external partners to develop new opportunities, improve existing provision and grow recruitment across the sports sector.

“I focus heavily on development and growth, working with stakeholders such as football clubs, schools and external partners to expand pathways and increase recruitment.”

By combining strategic planning with day-to-day operational leadership, James helps ensure learners receive the best possible experience both on and off the pitch.

Why HOET Feels Like Family

Having spent almost five years with the organisation, James believes one of HOET’s greatest strengths is its people.

“HOET is a fantastic environment to work in. It has a real family feel and everyone looks after everyone. There will always be someone to help you in any facet of the role.”

He also credits the organisation’s commitment to staff development as a major reason why he enjoys coming to work.

“The company is progressive and looks to find opportunities for its own staff. They push you forward in your career and as an individual.”

This supportive culture has played a significant role in James’s progression and continues to drive his passion for the organisation.

The Most Rewarding Part of the Role

For James, the best part of his job is working with people.

Whether it’s collaborating with colleagues across departments, visiting academy sites, or getting to know learners, people are at the heart of what makes the role so rewarding.

“The things I love about my role are the individuals I get to work alongside and with on a day-to-day basis.”

“Going into different sporting environments, meeting learners, seeing new personalities and getting to know each and every one of them is fantastic.”

Above all, James enjoys seeing learners challenge themselves and achieve their ambitions.

“Being in a competitive environment and seeing learners push themselves to be the best they can be and achieve the most they can achieve is the most rewarding feeling.”

A Culture of Support and Inclusion

When asked to describe HOET’s culture, James didn’t hesitate.

“I would describe the culture as a big family. Everyone looks after everyone and always looks out for each other.”

He also highlighted the organisation’s commitment to progression and inclusivity.

“HOET is progressive and always looking at how it can develop and move with the trends and the times.”

“Everyone is given the chance to succeed and is encouraged towards training and CPD within their expertise or interests.”

James also wanted to thank several colleagues who have positively influenced his journey.

“I’d like to mention the team I work with because they make it an enjoyable place to work and make going to every centre fun and engaging.”

He also thanked Rachel, Jill and Barry for their continued support throughout both his professional and personal development.

Beyond the Office and Football Pitch

Outside of work, James is a passionate sports fan.

His favourite pastimes include watching football, cricket and golf, as well as regularly playing golf himself. He also enjoys hiking and recently conquered Snowdon as part of his mission to complete the highest peaks in Britain.

And here’s a fact that might surprise some colleagues:

“I’m an avid American football fan and watch games every weekend it’s on. I support the Green Bay Packers, and the reason I got into American football was because of Aaron Rodgers.”

Looking Ahead

James’s journey from Sport Educator to National Head of Sports Education, Pathways & Growth is a fantastic example of the opportunities available at HOET. Through hard work, dedication and a passion for helping others succeed, he has built an impressive career while helping shape the future of sport education across the organisation.

His story demonstrates that at HOET, career progression isn’t just encouraged — it’s actively supported.
