From Learning to Leading: Max's Apprenticeship Journey
For many people leaving school or college, deciding on the next step can be challenging. For Max Ellis, the answer was clear. Rather than pursuing university, he wanted to gain real-world experience while achieving a recognised qualification.
As an Associate Project Manager Apprentice at National Grid, one of the UK’s largest energy infrastructure organisations, Max embarked on the Associate Project Manager Level 4 apprenticeship with Heart of England Training (HOET). Through hard work, dedication and support from both his employer and HOET, Max successfully completed his apprenticeship and achieved a Distinction.
Choosing an Apprenticeship Over University
Max was drawn to the apprenticeship route because it offered the opportunity to earn, learn and develop practical skills in a professional environment from day one.
“I chose an apprenticeship because I wanted to gain practical work experience while working towards a recognised qualification. University wasn’t the route I wanted to take, as I preferred the idea of learning in a real working environment and applying my knowledge directly to my role.”
The apprenticeship provided a structured pathway to build both technical knowledge and professional skills while progressing within his role at National Grid.
Support Every Step of the Way
A key part of Max’s success was the support he received throughout his apprenticeship programme with HOET.
Reflecting on his experience, Max highlighted the regular meetings with his educator and the balance between guided learning and independent study as some of the most valuable aspects of the programme.
“Overall, I found the training very beneficial and well structured. The regular meetings with my educator helped keep me on track and provided opportunities to discuss progress, ask questions, and receive feedback.”
He also praised the support available throughout the apprenticeship and the constructive feedback he received as he worked towards his End-Point Assessment.
“What stood out most was the support provided throughout the programme. The learning style offered a good balance between independent study and guided learning, which allowed me to develop confidence while still having support available when needed.”
The guidance from his educator played an important role in preparing him for key milestones and ultimately achieving a Distinction in his apprenticeship.
Making an Impact at National Grid
National Grid plays a vital role in connecting millions of people to the energy they use every day. Working within such a significant organisation has provided Max with valuable opportunities to apply his learning directly to real projects and responsibilities.
Throughout the apprenticeship, Max developed a range of skills that have strengthened his performance in the workplace.
“The apprenticeship has helped me develop skills and knowledge that I use regularly in my role. It has improved my understanding of industry best practices and provided me with tools and techniques that I can apply in my day-to-day work.”
Beyond technical knowledge, the programme also helped him develop important professional skills.
“It has also helped me become more confident when communicating, managing tasks, solving problems, and contributing to projects.”
By applying what he learned directly to his role, Max has been able to add greater value to his team and take on increased responsibility within the business.

Having completed his apprenticeship successfully, Max is a strong advocate for apprenticeships and the opportunities they provide.
“I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to anyone considering one. It provides a great opportunity to gain a qualification while developing practical experience and earning at the same time.”
For those considering starting their own apprenticeship journey, Max believes organisation and engagement are key.
“My advice would be to stay organised, make the most of the support available, and try to relate the learning back to your day-to-day role wherever possible. The more you engage with the programme, the more you will get out of it.”
