Choosing the Apprenticeship Route
After leaving school, Kirsty knew she wanted to work in an environment where she could learn by doing. Hairdressing offered the creativity, variety and customer interaction she was looking for, and an apprenticeship provided the opportunity to develop these skills in a real salon setting.
“I’ve always been interested in hairdressing and an apprenticeship gave me the opportunity to learn new skills, gain hands-on experience, and earn while I learn.”
For Kirsty, the biggest attraction was the chance to gain practical experience from day one while working towards a recognised qualification.
“I wanted a hands-on, fast-paced environment with hairdressing.”
A Positive Learning Experience with HOET
Throughout her apprenticeship journey, Kirsty has been supported by both her employer and her tutor at HOET. Having been on programme for 12 months, she has found the support available to her consistently reassuring and accessible.
“I’ve been working with HOET for 12 months and I’ve found the support really, really good.”
One aspect of her training that has stood out is the clarity provided from the very beginning of the programme.
“Everything is made really clear at the beginning of the apprenticeship, and I know I can always ask if I’m stuck.”
This strong foundation has helped Kirsty feel confident in her learning while ensuring that support is always available whenever she needs guidance.
Developing Skills and Confidence in the Salon
As a hairdressing apprentice, Kirsty spends her time learning directly within the salon environment, working with real clients and developing practical techniques alongside experienced professionals.
Over the past year, she has seen significant growth in both her technical abilities and her personal confidence.
“It’s helped me with my people skills and taking on real-time responsibilities.”
Working with clients every day has enabled Kirsty to strengthen her communication skills while learning how to manage different situations professionally.
One of the biggest lessons she has taken from her apprenticeship so far has been understanding the importance of customer interaction.
“I’ve learned a lot about communication skills with clients while developing hands-on experience in the salon.”
The opportunity to practise these skills in a real working environment has allowed Kirsty to develop much faster than she feels she would have in a traditional classroom setting.

A key part of Kirsty’s success has been the support she has received from her employer, The Healthy Hair Company. The team has played an important role in helping her develop her skills and confidence throughout her apprenticeship.
“They take extra time for training with me and have made me feel like I can go to them about anything with hair when I’m stuck.”
Having experienced professionals around her has given Kirsty the confidence to ask questions, learn from mistakes and continually improve. The supportive environment has helped her feel valued as part of the team while encouraging her professional development.
Helping Kirsty Achieve Her Career Goals
For Kirsty, the apprenticeship route is providing exactly the type of experience she needs to progress in the hairdressing industry.
The blend of practical learning, customer interaction and day-to-day problem solving is helping her prepare for a long-term career in the sector.
“Yes, it’s helping me achieve my career goals because it’s much more hands-on and you get to experience real problem solving.”
Being able to learn in a real salon environment has allowed Kirsty to gain first-hand experience of the challenges and responsibilities that come with a career in hairdressing.
Advice for Future Apprentices
When asked what advice she would give to someone considering an apprenticeship, Kirsty’s response was clear:
“It’s so much better than college because it gives you an idea of the real world.”
Her experience demonstrates the value of learning in the workplace, where apprentices can develop industry-specific skills while gaining confidence in a professional environment.
Kirsty would also strongly recommend completing an apprenticeship with HOET.
