In England, roughly 6,600 people began an apprenticeship in Hairdressing and barbering in 2020/21. Once seen as a stereotypical, middle-of-the-road job, hairdressing is now one of the most exciting, creative and rewarding options you can choose when beginning a career in that industry.
A Hairdressing Apprenticeship is the most specialised way to start your training. Our Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeships are available for both school leavers and existing staff, to enable them to gain valuable experience in the salon.
Gain experience in the industry
Want to work as a hairdresser but don’t have the experience? The first thing you need to do is get some!
Toby & Ashley, trainers at Browns Hairdressing Group, have been working alongside Heart of England Training for the past ten years. Their apprentices start their training once a week to help them settle in then, once they are comfortable, move it to two days and try to get them on the salon floor within four months.
“It helps allow them to get that confidence on their own.” Ashley said “When they’re in the academy they have got such a supportive, educational team around them as well as each other.”
When asked about his thoughts, Toby added; “People these days want to get hands-on straight away. They don’t want to be on blocks for six months, they’re not scared anymore, they want to be on the salon floor.”
The skills you will learn
A Hairdressing Apprenticeship is ideal if you have a passion for hairdressing and the aspiration to develop the skills you need to be a successful and talented stylist.
The desired skills you will need can include:
- Basic and advanced hairdressing techniques
- Front of house/reception duties
- Assisting other stylists
- Maths & English essentials
- Professional development
The relationship between Brown’s and HOET is that we provide the theory training whilst Toby & Ashley deliver the practical work themselves. As a result, they have had 11 Distinctions and 2 Pass, as well as 3 full Distinctions in one hit!
“It was really quite emotional for us” Ashley said “It was really lovely for them, and for us, to get that result and I think the whole process that we do leads up to those results.”
