In the Spotlight: Sheila Fretter

This month’s “In the Spotlight” celebrates Sheila Fretter, Hair and Beauty Apprenticeship Manager, whose remarkable 18-year journey with Heart of England Training (HOET) is a testament to her dedication, adaptability, and passion for education and personal development.

Sheila’s Journey at HOET

Sheila began her career at HOET in 2006/2007 as a hairdressing educator at the Leicester Academy’s first location. Back then, lessons were taught using whiteboards and projectors, long before the advent of PowerPoint and modern teaching technologies which was a challenge in itself but one that Sheila embraced.

She soon took on the role of Entry to Employment (E2E) Co-ordinator, where she helped students develop essential life and social skills to prepare them for the workplace. After 18 months, Sheila moved on to become the Academy Manager in Coventry, where she successfully ran the academy for five years.

Seeking new challenges, Sheila moved to manage the Rugby Academy. She focused on streamlining operations while nurturing both students and staff. During her time in Rugby, Sheila also took on the additional responsibility of an Internal Quality Assurer (IQA) to her position.

Most recently, Sheila served as the Team Leader for External Hairdressing, before stepping into her current position as the Hair and Beauty Apprenticeship Manager, where she oversees both Apprenticeship Account Managers and External Hairdressing Educators.

What does Sheila love about her role?

Sheila’s enthusiasm for her work is evident when she talks about her favourite aspects of working at HOET. “I like a challenge and organisation,” she explains. Achieving targets and seeing her team thrive bring her immense satisfaction. Her love of data reflects her commitment to ensuring her team’s success and growth.

 Proud Moments

For Sheila, the most rewarding part of her career has been working with students, particularly those with special educational needs (SEN). She fondly remembers one learner with Down syndrome, who left a lasting impression. “She’s brilliant. She’s now a speaker, promoting how you can achieve your goals with Down syndrome,” Sheila says proudly.

Mentors and Support

Sheila credits many people at Heart of England Training for supporting her development. “Rachel has always helped me. I wouldn’t be here without her support. Anne-Marie has also guided me a lot as well.” Sheila also reflects on the early days at the Leicester Academy, where Ruth Munday and Emma Barker helped her build the foundation of her career.

Life outside of work

When she’s not at work, Sheila enjoys spending time with her family, including her children and grandchildren. “My house is never empty, which is great! If they’re not there, they’re ringing me,” she jokes. Sheila also loves motorsports and socialising with friends.

Continuous Development

Sheila’s commitment to personal and professional growth is evident in the numerous qualifications she has achieved during her time at HOET. Starting with a Level 2 Hairdressing qualification, she has since earned her CAVA qualification, Level 3 Hairdressing, functional skills, IQA qualification, PTLLS and CTLLS teaching certifications, a Level 3 Management apprenticeship, Customer Service Level 2 apprenticeship, IOSH qualification, and DSL training.

Her accomplishments highlight HOET’s dedication to fostering employee development and ensuring team members reach their potential.
