Gordon Staines, the Schools Business Manager at St Edward’s school, embarked on a transformative journey through the School Business Professional Level 4 apprenticeship program offered by us at Heart of England Training.

He details the value of tailored programmes in building confidence and competence, even for seasoned professionals transitioning into new roles.

Why Gordon chose an apprenticeship?

When Gordon first stepped into his role at the School Business Manager at St Edwards School, he was confronted with unexpected challenges. Transitioning from the private to the public sector proved to be more significant than first anticipated, despite his 30 years of experience in business and management.

“I initially struggled to approach my new role with confidence” Gordon shares. While searching for relevant training courses, he discovered the HOET apprenticeship programme. “It was only then that I felt reassured this was the right course to help me build the competence and confidence needed to excel in my role”. The programme offered Gordan a blend of practical knowledge and structured support to navigate his new responsibilities effectively.

A training experience which stood out.

Gordon’s apprenticeship journey was marked by the support from his educator, Heidi. “The entire experience has been fantastic, but the standout aspect has been the incredible support from Heidi”, he notes.

From their first meeting, Heidi provided clear guidance and ensured Gordon understood how to navigate, the apprenticeship. His dedication included regular meetings, constructive feedback any advice on accessing the right resources. “Her guidance was particularly helpful for navigating day courses, which were so informative and well-presented and completing the required work afterwards”. Gordon explains.

He credits Heidi’s encouragement and expertise as key to completing the course successfully and building his confidence in the process.

The benefits of the apprenticeship.

Gordon is unequivocal about the value of the apprenticeship to his role. “The program was incredibly beneficial, particularly when transitioning into a new sector or taking on responsibilities requiring specialised knowledge,” he says. By combining practical, hands-on experience with theoretical learning, the program provided him with the tools to bridge the gap between his extensive private-sector experience and the demands of the public sector.

“The structured support from educators and peers was instrumental in navigating challenges and applying what I learned directly in my role,” Gordon reflects. The program enabled him to adapt and grow into his position effectively, helping him meet the unique requirements of the public sector with confidence.

Conclusion

Gordon Staines’ journey through the HOET School Business Manager Level 4 apprenticeship underscores the importance of ongoing professional development, especially when transitioning into new or challenging roles. His story serves as a testament to how the right support and training can empower individuals to thrive, regardless of their prior experience.

For Gordon, the HOET apprenticeship not only enhanced his skills but also bridged a critical gap, enabling him to succeed and lead with confidence in his role at St Edward’s School.
