Finding the Right Alternative to University
Before starting his apprenticeship, Hezron explored higher education but soon realised it was not the right route for him.
Having attended university on two separate occasions, he found that the traditional academic pathway did not align with his goals. At the same time, he was actively volunteering across several departments within a newly established church while working in a warehouse to support himself financially. When the church offered him a permanent position, there was a clear opportunity to gain a professional qualification alongside his employment.
Reflecting on his decision, Hezron explained:
“I tried university twice, but realised it wasn’t for me. I was already volunteering across different departments at our brand-new church, while also working in a warehouse to earn a wage. The church eventually offered me a job, but I needed a qualification, so they offered me an apprenticeship instead, allowing me to gain the qualification while working there.”
For Hezron, the apprenticeship route offered the ideal combination of practical experience and professional development, enabling him to learn while making an impact in the workplace.
A Supportive Learning Experience with HOET
Throughout his apprenticeship, Hezron found the support provided by HOET instrumental to his success.
He particularly valued the personalised approach to learning and the commitment shown by his educator, Jinny, who supported him throughout every stage of the programme. Speaking about his experience, he said:
“I really valued how involved HOET were throughout my apprenticeship and how they adapted to my needs. Jinny was also incredibly encouraging, proactive and supportive throughout the journey.”

Making a Difference in the Workplace
The skills and knowledge gained during the Operations Manager apprenticeship have had a significant impact on Hezron’s professional development and on the continued growth of The Peniel Centre.
As part of a relatively new organisation, Hezron witnessed first-hand the challenges that can come with establishing effective processes and structures. Through his apprenticeship learning, he developed a greater understanding of workplace operations, management practices and organisational processes.
He explained:
“Definitely. As a new church, we didn’t have much structure at the beginning, but I now work with colleagues from a range of backgrounds and understand the language and processes much better. We’re also becoming more structured and moving forward as an organisation.”
This enhanced understanding has helped him contribute more effectively within his role while supporting the organisation’s continued development and long-term success.
Achieving a Distinction
Successfully completing an Operations Manager Level 5 Apprenticeship is a significant accomplishment, and achieving a Distinction demonstrates the commitment, resilience and professionalism Hezron showed throughout the programme.
By combining on-the-job experience with structured learning and dedicated support, Hezron was able to develop both personally and professionally while gaining a nationally recognised qualification. His achievement highlights the value apprenticeships can offer individuals seeking an alternative route to career progression.
Advice for Future Apprentices
Having completed his apprenticeship journey, Hezron encourages others considering an apprenticeship to take full advantage of the support available.
His advice is simple but powerful:
“Make the most of the resources available to support you throughout your apprenticeship. Be honest, build a good relationship with your educator and most importantly, work hard.”

“Yes, definitely. Jinny was always committed to helping me complete my apprenticeship, even when challenges came up and would always find solutions to help me move forward.”
