At Heart of England Training, career development is something we see every day, not only among our learners and apprentices, but within our own team too.
This month’s In the Spotlight introduces Ben Jones, our National Head of Apprenticeships, who has progressed through a number of roles since joining Heart of England Training in May 2019. From beginning his HOET journey as an Educator to now overseeing our apprenticeship provision, Ben’s career reflects his passion for education, people and supporting continued growth.
Starting His Career at Heart of England Training
Ben joined Heart of England Training more than seven years ago, originally working as an Educator within the Schools and Business team. At the time, the team consisted of around ten people.
As his career developed, Ben moved into a Team Leader position, combining leadership responsibilities with his existing role as an Educator. He was later promoted to Apprenticeship Manager before progressing into his current position as National Head of Apprenticeships.
Reflecting on his progression, Ben explained:
“I started as an educator in the schools and business team with around 10 people. I then moved into a team leader position where I did a split role with my educator responsibilities. I then was promoted to Apprenticeship Manager.”
Today, his role spans the wider management of apprenticeship provision at Heart of England Training. His responsibilities include staff management, decision-making, strategic planning, quality support and helping to resolve challenges as they arise.
Leading Apprenticeship Provision at HOET
As National Head of Apprenticeships, one of the aspects Ben values is the opportunity to work alongside colleagues from different areas of the organisation.
“I am lucky enough to get involved with so many great educators and staff,” Ben said.
And it’s that focus on people which plays an important role in what Ben enjoys about his position.
“I am a big people person, so I enjoy working with all different individuals. I like helping them grow and learning from them and being approachable.”
Ben also highlights the learner journeys he gets to see through his work, particularly the stories of progression and development that emerge throughout their time with Heart of England Training.
A Passion for Education and Learner Development
Education has remained a consistent passion throughout Ben’s career, making Heart of England Training a natural environment for his own professional development.
Explaining what has kept him at HOET for more than seven years, Ben said:
“I have always had a passion for education and HOET always put the learners first. Our provision is incredible and I am proud to be a part of it and support its continued growth.”
For Ben, however, it isn’t only the work itself that makes HOET a great place to build a career. The people and relationships he has developed along the way have also had a significant impact.
“The people at HOET are amazing so I can’t forget that either. Everyone will always support you, and we’ve got a great community feel,” he added.
Supporting Career Progression
Throughout his time at Heart of England Training, Ben has worked alongside many colleagues who have contributed to his own development.
One person he particularly credits is Rachel, whose support has played an important part in his progression into management.
“Rachel has been invaluable in my growth as a manager, and I don’t think I’d be in the position I am without her support and guidance.”
From Educator to National Head of Apprenticeships, Ben’s journey demonstrates how responsibilities and opportunities can develop over time, while allowing a passion for education and supporting others to remain at the heart of a career.
Life Outside Heart of England Training
Away from apprenticeships and education, sport plays a big part in Ben’s life.
He describes himself as a “huge sports fan” and, in his own words, “unfortunately” a Manchester United supporter. Football, golf and darts are among his favourite sports, although golf has taken the lead more recently.
Ben has also recently welcomed his first child and enjoys spending time with his family, as well as maintaining a busy social life with friends and family.
