Will I have to take exams during an apprenticeship or full-time course?
It’s one of the most common questions we’re asked by both prospective learners and employers:
“Will there be exams?”
The short answer is:
👉 Sometimes — but they’re only one part of the overall assessment.
Modern apprenticeships and full-time courses are designed to reflect real work environments, meaning assessment methods are much more flexible than traditional school exams.
How apprenticeships are assessed
Apprenticeships are built around developing real skills in the workplace. Instead of relying heavily on exams, learners are assessed through a mix of practical and knowledge-based activities.
1. Ongoing coursework and practical assessment
Throughout the programme, apprentices will complete:
- Practical tasks in their job role
- Projects and written assignments
- Observations from their educator
- A portfolio of evidence showcasing their progress
This allows learners to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and behaviours in real-life situations — something that also gives employers clear visibility of development.
2. English and maths (Functional Skills)
Depending on previous qualifications, some learners will need to complete English and maths Functional Skills.
This may include exams, but these are fully supported and form only a small part of the overall apprenticeship.
3. End-Point Assessment (EPA)
At the end of the apprenticeship, learners complete an End-Point Assessment (EPA) — the final stage of the programme.
This is sometimes mistaken for a traditional exam, but in reality it can include:
- A practical assessment
- A professional discussion
- A project or portfolio review
There is also a dedicated preparation period before this, ensuring learners feel confident and ready.
How full-time courses are assessed
Full-time courses follow a similar approach, combining practical learning with structured assessment.
Depending on the qualification, learners may complete:
- Coursework and assignments
- Practical assessments
- Occasional written exams
For example, some vocational programmes include recognised diplomas as part of the course, which may involve formal assessment elements.
What this means for learners and employers
For learners
- You won’t be relying solely on exams
- You’ll be assessed on what you can do, not just what you can remember
- You’ll receive ongoing support throughout your learning
For employers
- Assessments reflect real workplace performance
- Apprentices build job-ready skills throughout the programme
- Progress is tracked consistently, not left to a final test
So, will I be sitting lots of exams?
👉 In most cases, no.
Instead, you can expect:
- A mix of practical assessments and coursework
- Continuous feedback and support
- A final assessment based on real job competence
This approach helps remove pressure and creates a more realistic, supportive learning experience.
