At Heart of England Training, we’re proud to celebrate the success of apprentices who go above and beyond in their roles. Aidan Brock, employed by National Grid, is a standout example—achieving a Distinction in his Associate Project Manager Apprenticeship and making a lasting impact within his team.

Building Skills Through Real-World Experience

Aidan chose the apprenticeship route to suit his hands-on learning style, explaining:

“As a kinaesthetic learner, I need to give stuff a go to learn it, so I felt that apprenticeships were a perfect fit for me… it really worked out in a way that exceeded expectations.”

Through the programme, Aidan developed core project management principles while applying them directly within his role at National Grid. This combination of practical experience and structured learning allowed him to progress confidently and effectively.

He adds: “I have learned the principles of project management while applying them in my role… which has worked hand in hand with my learning style.”

A Supportive Learning Journey

A key part of Aidan’s success was the tailored support he received throughout his apprenticeship. Working closely with his HOET educator, he benefited from a structured yet flexible approach to learning.

“The whole process… was pretty much flawless from start to finish due to the adaptability of the approach that suited my learning style.”

Regular progress reviews and consistent guidance ensured Aidan stayed on track, particularly during more challenging periods such as the early stages of the programme and preparation for End Point Assessment.

Making an Immediate Impact at National Grid

From an employer’s perspective, Aidan’s contribution has been significant. Adam Richards, Senior Project Manager at National Grid, highlights the value he has brought to the team:

“To have such a proactive, capable individual join the team and make a real impact from the outset has been great.”

Beyond his technical contributions, Aidan’s attitude and approach have made a lasting impression:

“His good nature, enthusiasm and drive have proved infectious, and have helped the team around him to also step-up and successfully overcome some real challenges.”

This demonstrates the wider organisational impact of apprenticeships—not just developing individual talent, but strengthening entire teams.

Award-Winning Achievement

Aidan’s dedication and professionalism have not gone unnoticed. He was recognised at National Grid’s internal awards, where he competed against a strong field of candidates.

“Aidan was nominated and won Apprentice of the Year… by demonstrating an outstanding level of professionalism and drive to make a real impact in the first 18 months of his career.”

This achievement reflects both his personal commitment and the effectiveness of the apprenticeship programme in developing high-performing professionals.

Developing Future Leaders in Project Management

Throughout his apprenticeship, Aidan has grown not only in technical knowledge but also in key professional skills. Adam notes significant development in areas such as communication, negotiation and influencing:

“The most notable improvements have been around his level of confidence and self-awareness… These skills have been readily applied to… make a real impact within the team and beyond.”

As Aidan continues his career, these capabilities position him to take on increasing responsibility and play a key role in delivering projects for National Grid.

A Programme That Delivers Results

The Associate Project Manager Apprenticeship offers a unique blend of academic learning and practical application. Unlike traditional pathways, apprentices are able to develop and apply their knowledge simultaneously, accelerating both confidence and competence.

Adam explains:

“This programme provides individuals with the opportunity to gain both in-depth academic understanding, and practical industry skills and experience in parallel… delivering better results in a shorter timeframe.”

This integrated approach ensures that apprentices are workplace-ready from an early stage, delivering real value to their employers.
