The Birdcage Hair Salon, based within Northamptonshire, held a wellness day for their staff during Mental Health Awareness Week.

Taz, the salon director, encouraged the team to join the event by managing to get local businesses involved. The morning began with a Pilates class held by a local instructor, going through different breathing exercises and how to manage the activity to the best of their ability.

Once the session was complete, they all had a delicious healthy breakfast, enabling them to connect and have a good ‘chit-chat’.

“We all sat together as a team and enjoyed this bonding time” said Taz “we didn’t rush and just chatted.”

A healthy mindset

After the meal The Pod, a wellness centre based in Burton Latimer, lead a talk about managing anxiety and stress, as Taz felt it was something the team was noticing more at the salon.

“As the team is getting bigger, I wanted this to be a subject for them to discuss” he added “I wanted them to support one another.”

They also discussed how food can reflect someone’s mood, calling it ‘food move mood’, explaining how healthy eating can affect your mental wellness. Taz saw how much the team enjoyed the talk, as each member of staff were open about their feelings towards the group.

Overall, Taz found the wellness day had really boosted the morale amongst his staff, letting them feel refreshed and open to talk about wellness with their clients.

Chyna Tallet, a hair stylist at The Birdcage agreed, mentioning that they should offer these days in the future.

“I really enjoyed taking part.” She said “I personally enjoyed the talk about dealing with stress and anxiety…who knew a simple technique such as breathing could help calm me down.”

What’s next?

In celebration of the salon’s 10-year anniversary, the salon will be holding an event for all of their customers at the end of July this year.
