Why did you choose an apprenticeship?

I chose an apprenticeship as I have always found learning in a classroom environment rather difficult, and practical learning was the best way for me to learn. As a kinaesthetic learner, being able to do what it is I am learning really helps me to digest and understand what I am learning.

How did you find the initial stages and the enrolment processes? Have you received all the support required so far?

I found the initial stages of the enrolment process rather simple and a straightforward process. At first, I was a bit daunted by it, as I wasn’t sure what to expect. However, I received lots of support from my educator and from my colleagues that really helped me feel at ease and understand what was expected of me.

How do you find the training received from HOET?  Anything that stands out to you? i.e your educator, how regular your meetings were, the learning style and resources etc

I find the training I have received from HOET is excellent. The day courses are very interactive and full of useful information, all the while you can ask questions whenever you need and will face no judgement. I find my educator has really stood out to me, she is always very supportive of my learning, and is quick to offer me help whenever I need. I have not once felt like I cannot go to her for support. My educator always goes above and beyond for me.

Do you think your apprenticeship is beneficial to your role, the school and pupils you work with? If so, why?

I do believe my apprenticeship is beneficial to my role as a Learning Support Assistant. I started this apprenticeship at the same time as starting my role as an LSA, so everything I have done through HOET has greatly improved my knowledge and understanding of what is expected of me in my role, what I should know in my role, and other useful things like behaviour management and understanding different learning styles and methods of teaching. It is also beneficial to the pupils I work with, this is because I work with SEND students, so learning more about how to support children with SEND needs has really helped me to work and communicate with the students themselves. Being able to talk with fellow apprentices during the day courses has helped me learn some behavioural techniques and implement a few other teaching and supportive techniques into what I do.

Would you recommend doing an apprenticeship with HOET?

I would recommend doing an apprenticeship with HOET, the courses and set tasks are very informative and beneficial. They really help to strengthen your knowledge and understanding of all the areas covered in the course. Furthermore, they also help you to strengthen your understanding of your own schools’ policies and procedures. The educators are phenomenal, they are very friendly and supportive, and always go above and beyond wherever they can to help, and they are very knowledgeable!
