PROTECTION OF PUBLIC FUNDS
We must protect the public funds we handle and so we may use the information you have provided on your application to prevent and detect fraud. We may also share this information, for the same purposes, with other organisations that handle public funds, and with this in mind, a sample of applications will be chosen at random for full investigation.
DATA PROTECTION
The data you provide will be used to assess and facilitate your entitlement to help from the 16-19 Bursary Fund. In fulfilling its data protection obligations, we will treat all personal data, held manually and on a computerised database with due care, and will only disclose data in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998. |
16 – 19 Bursary fund statement
The 16-19 Bursary Fund helps young people who face financial barriers to continue in education or training; you must be over 16 but under 19 on 31st August 2023 to be eligible for the 2023 – 2024 academic year.
Bursaries are assessed on each student’s individual circumstances and their actual financial need. To assess your needs, you will be asked to provide evidence of your financial circumstances which should be clear and accurate. All evidence should be attached at the online application stage.
The fund has two elements:
- Vulnerable Bursary
You can apply for a Vulnerable Bursary of up to £1200 if you fall into one of the groups below: Evidence must be provided to support your application
- You are receiving Income Support (IS), or Universal Credit (UC) in your own name
- You are receiving Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payments (PIP) in your own name, as well as Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or UC in your own name
- Discretionary Bursary
You can apply for a Discretionary Bursary if you do not fall into any of the vulnerable groups, but you need financial help to stay in education. You may be entitled to a Discretionary Bursary if you fall into one of the areas below:
- Your household income is below £37,500
- Your parent/carers receive benefits
- If you have been entitled to free school meals
If you are 19 and over
You could also get a bursary if you either:
- are continuing a course you started aged 16 to 18 (known as being a ’19+ continuer’)
- have a Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
